According to the data of the 2004 of the Gfk Hungary market research company, dogs are kept in 1.5 million households (40% of the Hungarian households) and cats are kept in 1.6 million households.
The database of TGI Hungary of 2003 shows that half of the population between 14-69 years of age keep pets (dogs, cats, birds or other small pets) in their homes which is 3,781,000 people in total: 38% have dogs, 26% have cats, 5% have birds and 6% have other small mammals.
Women buy cat food more frequently than men since women tend to keep cats more frequently in their homes.
In big cities people buy more canned pet food and dog biscuits than in villages and small cities.
There is no such difference in dry food although the penetration is smaller in villages. These people have more cats and dogs in general but they still use more table scraps for feeding their pets.
